A large-scale national study of AI-powered tutoring platforms has found that students using the technology for at least 30 minutes per week improved math scores by an average of 18% and reading scores by 12% over one semester. The study, conducted by the RAND Corporation, tracked 45,000 students across 300 school districts.
The AI tutors adapted in real time to student performance, adjusting difficulty levels and providing targeted feedback. Teachers reported that the platforms freed up classroom time for collaborative projects and one-on-one instruction with struggling students.
However, researchers cautioned that the technology works best as a supplement to human instruction, not a replacement, and that schools must address equity concerns around device and internet access.
