Online learning platform Coursera announced partnerships with five major universities to launch AI-enhanced degree programs that use adaptive learning technology to personalize the educational experience for each student. The universities involved are the University of Michigan, Georgia Tech, University of Illinois, Arizona State University, and Imperial College London.
The new programs span computer science, business analytics, public health, and engineering management, with tuition ranging from $10,000 to $22,000 for a full master's degree. Coursera's AI system analyzes student performance in real time and adjusts coursework difficulty, suggests supplemental materials, and identifies knowledge gaps before they become problematic.
Early pilots of the adaptive technology showed a 15% improvement in course completion rates and a 12% increase in average grades compared to traditional online cohorts. Coursera CEO Jeff Maggioncalda said the programs represent the next evolution of online education, combining the credibility of top-tier university degrees with the accessibility and personalization that technology enables.
