The Department of Education announced on Tuesday an extension of the student loan payment pause for approximately 3.2 million borrowers enrolled in income-driven repayment plans. The temporary relief comes as the administration works to resolve ongoing litigation that has stalled its broader loan forgiveness initiatives.
Under the extension, affected borrowers will not be required to make payments through September 2026, and no interest will accrue during this period. The pause applies specifically to borrowers whose monthly payment amounts are being recalculated under revised income-driven formulas challenged in federal court.
Student advocacy groups welcomed the announcement but urged the administration to pursue more permanent solutions. The average affected borrower carries approximately $38,000 in federal student loan debt and has been in repayment for more than eight years.
